Not sure if this is helpful or not. This is from the color/interior selection page (on the Reservation website).

It's not clear exactly what "finalize your ... order" means (options, including color???). I thought I read somewhere that color choices could be changed prior to placing a formal order, but can't find it right now.

This page on this forum Subaru Solterra Reservation FAQs states this (not exactly clear what "any changes" refers to):

Sounds like you visit the dealer and agree on the order - which then gets submitted to Subaru via dealership ordering system. This is how Ford operates. Subaru isn't doing direct sales like Tesla or Rivian.

After the dealer order is submitted - the order belongs to the dealer and can not be moved to other dealership (much like a normal Subaru order - I was about to submit an order for an Outback last fall). If you cancel, I suspect the dealer will refund you the deposit and wait for the car to sell at a markup to somebody else (which is what Ford dealers do and Ford corporate is okay with this)

A reservation isn't exactly an order so I would think that one could make final selections for the real order when that process is available. I'll guess that asking for color choices is a little bit of market research on their part as is trim level with the reservation.

Any idea how long loading, shipping and trucking to the dealer takes?
For Subaru/Toyota, from Japan? No, but... the BMW I bought in 2019 began production on April 2 and I took delivery of it June 6 (Bremerhaven to Baltimore by ship, Baltimore to St. Louis by train/truck, sat in St. Louis for about a week before I picked it up) - so that was about 8 weeks to the dealership. The Pacific crossing is longer than the Atlantic... I think.

The Solterra options are so few... They can build them ahead of time.

I had a 2021 Bronco built. There were literally hundreds of available options.
This car was built the first Tuesday of production and still took 60 days to get here by rail.

I just got a feeling that your reservation begins actual production. There's just not enough time for delay if Subaru wants summer delivery.

In the before times it would have taken about a month, (this is depending on where they will manufacture them. Everything I’ve seen so far suggests that they will be produced in one of their two factories in Japan) With shipping delays still prevalent I would expect a healthy 1.5 - 2 months. Some dealers are already reporting scheduled deliveries as early as June so they will be burning the midnight oil if everything goes according to plan (which is hardly ever does).

I had heard arrival at dealerships beginning mid to late May, but my dealership called me this afternoon to tell me to expect delivery between July and December. That said, I'm their #1 reservation, so I hope I'm closer to July than December.
