A subaru salesman told me that the safety features of Soltera Connect (collision emergency, etc) are in effect for ten years however the operation features such as remote door unlock and remote start are only in effect for one year. Anyone heard confirmation of tnis?

That is correct, for the US.

If you have the Solterra Connect app, you can see this info there under Get to know Connected Services > Manage Subscription.

Safety Connect is covered for 10 years from the in-service date. Drive Connect and Remote Connect are good for 12 months. Wi-Fi connect is provided for just 30 days.

With your Drive Connect, you are able to use the native GPS Nav? I didn't get that on mine. Is that free trial only for US cars?

However, my Digital Key one goes to 2026!

@R P I don't know if US only. Yes, able to use native navigation, FWIW (I prefer TomTom GO in Android Auto). The one advantage of using the native nav is that it puts the turn-by-turn directions in the "instrument panel".

It's not a big deal, as I also use Android Auto. But was a little surprised that there was no free access at all to the native nav. I thought Connect meant additional real time access to traffic, etc, and you would still retain basic GPS Nav without it. That's how my Kona worked.

But at least we have wireless AA and Carplay. That is very convenient. My other cars required that you plug in your phone.

Yeah, wireless AA seems to work pretty well, and not having to plug in makes it really convenient. The Q4 e-tron I "almost bought" (when the Solterra's arrival was seriously in doubt) didn't have any native nav, not even by subscription, except in the top of the line trim, which cost at least $6k (US) more that the top Solterra.

Check out my ‘Solterra Connect (Canada)’ thread. The first post outlines what is included for Canada. Basically everything is on a 3 year trial except Drive Connect. No trial. Month to month subscription. Drive connect is what gives access to the native navigation and more features.

I hate subscriptions, they've already got me bad enough with streaming, and extra TV channels (why are all the ones you don't want free with your basic plan). But seems like just a matter of time when it becomes part of your car's operating expense, like electricity and maintenance items. I see some charger networks also want you to go on a monthly plan giving a lower rate when plugged in.

But with the app only thing I really would want is to be able to remotely check my battery SOC and time to finish charging. Also would be nice to see the kW rate (when DC charging). Can't even get that from the car itself (as when opening the door while charging). Just have to keep an eye on the charger kW rate.

The only thing that surprises me is why it took so long for automakers to make it to “the game”.

Recurring charges have been around for decades in other industries, so it really isn’t unexpected to see vehicle manufacturers move in that direction.

Better Buckle up… it’s only going to get worse…

That is correct. The features from the app are governed by a Toyota and not Subaru so after one free year you’ll have to pay a subscription fee to continue to use the app on your phone

I've used Waze for a long time, so just stick with that. I like the radar alerts. Also I don't have to squint to read road names. I like how they show them all horizontally.
