For the former, even though one isn't "burning gas", wind resistance will put more load on the motor/battery which will in turn, affect range. That's not a big factor for off-roading like it sounds like you want to do because your speeds are slow, but if you are also using it on the road at normal speeds, it's going to show up. This is less of a concern with rear mounted. the downside there is a hit to rear visibility, rendering the backup camera useless and potentially requiring accommodation for visible and lighted license, depending on your jurisdiction.
