I am not a historian of technology. I taught philosophy at the university level.

It is interesting to remember that two kinds of people bought automobiles in the beginning. Engineers (better described as mechanics) did so because they love machines and were confident they could keep them running. Most people feared they would break down and no one could get them running again. They did not imagine mechanics on every corner. The original Model T Ford came with a manual explaining how to pull the head and grind the valves so the engine would work again. None of us grind our valves on ICE engines these days. Before he imagined the Model T Herny Ford worked on race cars.

Doctors bought cars because they were more efficient in getting to sick patients than horse and buggy. And doctorrs could afford them and pay to get them repaired.

My favoriet Model T picture. Out in the back field.
