Love Subaru, dislike Subaru Connect

Dont Buy a Solterra Just Yet - Read Below

Love my Solterra but hate Subaru Connect and the dealership experience. Enclosed is my beautiful car but want to make you aware of certain things before you buy, would suggest waiting until they fix these issues before you buy one:

1. Subaru Connect doesn't work, it is flaky and when does work only can work for one user. Plus, the additional cost after 1 year is $192 and the basic feature you are paying for is to start the car remotely which is a free feature in Telsa's that is more advanced as you have multiple app profiles that have control of all the features, stop/starting charging, remote temperature set, cabin overheat protection, and dog mode.
2. Subaru claims to be a dog loving company but is not true and this car demonstrates it. Tesla has a dog mode, meaning you want the temperature in the cabin set to a cool temperature for safety reasons in case you need to step away for a bit and leave dog in car; ie not safe outside as floor is very hot for dog. Subaru doesn't have this feature and the remote start is similar but has a timer of 20 minutes. If you forget to turn timer back on your dog will fry and die. Assuming your Subaru Connect works. Take a look at pictures of when I try to remote set temperature.
3. I have a number of tickets open with Subaru Connect, who in reality is Toyota behind the scenes. The profiles for the Subaru Connect don't work for me. Every time I go in the car it doesn't adjust mirrors and seats as indicated even after following the instruction in manual to setup.
4. The multiple profiles don't work either. Every time I get into car it doesnt detect me, even though I have the key and digital key as well as app running with bluetooth connected to car. It always loads to guest mode.
5. App is very annoying, every time I go to car it ask me to approve connection, even when I approve which is stupid I get asked each time the profiles don't load.
6. The digital key doesn't work. I have it loaded and still have to carry a physical key as I cant count on it and even indicates in manual that you must always carry a physical key in case your digital doesn't work.
7. The dealers and technicians have no idea how the car works and what it comes with when you ordered. They push you to buy the car and tell you that everything should come in email later, never did and had to open a Subaru ticket to get them to send me the $400 EV credit and 10-day rental car coupon, which was wrong and opened another ticket. Read next one. In order to get the updates I was told I have to bring in car to the dealership, this is ridiculous as we all know they try to sell you more things when you go in. Speaking of selling, with Subaru you have to buy the maintenance plan for $600. The exact same car which is BZ4X at Toyota is same price and the include the 3 year maintenance for free. A $600 savings.
8. If you purchase or lease a Solterra you should get "Three" not two years of rental car, take a look at picture and email they sent me. Subaru is not fulfilling their contract and you should fight to get the 3 years as indicated in email below when I reserved Solterra.
9. I gave the dealer zeros across the board for their survey, they push you off to Subaru and to this date have spent 4 hours at the dealership them trying to fix my profile issues which now they say "may be fixed in future update" that may come out in a month. Who knows if I will ever get this fixed. They just keep pushing you away and Toyota rep indicated that multiple customers are complaining with similar issues. Like the Subaru Connect agent said when they attempt each time to fix my car. "It is our first attempt at this, and we are still learning." So my advice, wait until they learn how to make EV cars and don't be their guinea pig.

"Buy A Tesla for now" - The cost is about the same and you will love the car as they have figured out the above and didnt have to recall the car because the tires were falling off. I trusted the brand is I love Subaru and had an Outback but this experience has been horrible and if I had the chance again I would not have bought it and waiting several years until they fix their issues.

Idk if it’s just you, I have a different experience.

1. No issues with Subaru connect, wife and I share the same account and both can remote start/lock/unlock with no issues.
2. Again no issues with Subaru connect, would feel fine leaving dog in the car. I don’t spend more than 20 minutes in a store.
3. I paired profiles to the actual keys, I guess there may be issues with the digital keys, but carrying key fob works great. Car remembers my settings and car remembers wife’s based on fobs.
4. Not noticed this, maybe a digital key issues?
5. Have not witnessed the app asking about connections, I just get in and drive with my settings and Apple car play.
6. I don’t use digital key, key fob with loaded profile.
7. Agree!!! Dealers are unaware of features and quirks of the vehicle. This could be much better. However, this is a new model vehicle and takes time for things to change and for techs to learn.
8. Not so concerned about the rental car, I have a gas guzzling truck…..
9. I have spent maybe 45 minutes at the dealer, they fixed the recall on the tires and made changes to the settings I wanted. Again, it takes time for dealers to learn new models.

About the Teslas, listen, to each their own. Tesla’s we’re not perfect first model. Teslas are not “perfect” today.

Tesla currently has a substantial recall for crash related risks due to software, and I don’t believe it’s an update over air.

Pretty sure Tesla recalled vehicles for steering issues, the steering wheel would stop working.

Air bag issues sending shrapnel, sounds yummy.

Each manufacturer has recalls, some more than others. Consumers will makes toyotaru familiar with the problems and they will get fixed over time.

I have had zero issues with my Solterra, I think the only complaint is the wife drives it more than me.

Sounds like you DO NOT love the Solterra.....or perhaps you just went to the wrong dealer, which sounds more accurate to me.
The Connect app is Toyota based, as the vehicle is built in Toyota's plant....not Subaru's fault and I agree with the previous reply. Have had no issues with my Connect app.

As for the memory seat settings, I followed the instructions from a previous post about the memory settings not holding. You must calibrate the seat, before the memory setting will work properly.
Another Toyota quirk. This should have been done by the dealer when the first received the car, but they were also unaware of this issue. Simply quick fix and now my memory settings work just fine.

Dog mode, was a great idea for Teslas......was it on the original cars, NO!

Couldn't agree more with this answer: "7. Agree!!! Dealers are unaware of features and quirks of the vehicle. This could be much better. However, this is a new model vehicle and takes time for things to change and for techs to learn." Subaru's first EV, of course just like most of America, not all dealers &/or personnel are on board with EVs & didn't take the time to learn about them correctly. Again, picked the wrong dealer/salesperson.

@cpmalloy6 I tried to pair the SmartKey to our Solterra, but failed. Honestly, I'm pretty sure I did it wrong since the manual is not very precise. I only tried once since I was fiddling with Connect for a couple of hours prior and was already frustrated. Do you push the Seat Memory number (1 or 2) while pressing the Door Lock Switch on the door or the Door Lock Switch on the SmartKey? I did the former and moved on to other Connect things. It did not work, so just looking for confirmation it was the latter (Seat Memory number (1 or 2) while pressing the Door Lock Switch on the SmartKey).

Some of what @Al Mata writes about Connect I agree with and my problems are likely my misunderstanding of the poorly written manual. Yet, I definitely do not agree people should skip the Solterra for any Tesla. Apples-and-oranges. Teslas are for people who love touch screens, harsh European rides, noisy interiors, and don't mind squeaks/rattles. Solterras are like regular cars with normal buttons/features and they ride like a Lexus. I'll live with the minor Connect frustrations for all the other Solterra awesomeness. I think the people who buy Teslas would not buy a Solterra and vice versa.
