I don’t think the door buttons work the way you think. There is no documentation I’ve seen, but all the observations from forum members as we tried to get profiles to reliably load for months and months after the car was introduced indicate the door buttons are seat settings that are tied to a profile. Now which profile that loads and which setting gets activated are still just a guess until you push the button and see where your seat ends up (at least that’s been my experience).

At least for the 2023’s, the only way to get a profile to automatically load is to link one to a key fob.
I agree with this assessment 100%. The key fob seems to be the true “key” in getting profiles to load correctly.

None of the above- way too much digital stuff for me. and the charge limit sticks.
Okay - two questions after talking to my dealership. They said that it will always bump to 100% if you only charge with a level 2 charger since it won’t hurt it. Are you using level 3 and it sticks? And what year and trim do you have? I’m a ‘24 Premium.

Unfortunately, like most dealerships, they don't know what they are talking about. Have them show you the technical documentation that says that since it conflicts with what the owner's manual says.

Level 2 sticks just fine at 80 or 90%, unless we change it "manually" in the center display. Having never had the patience to charge "on the road" any more than absolutely necessary to get home I can not attest to Level 3 DCFC charging limits.

I really am hesitant to say anything bad about my dealership - they have been the most upfront, dedicated shop I've ever encountered (Dewey Griffin in Bellingham, WA, USA). That wasn't just some guy pulling a fact out of his nose - he talked to the lead in delivering these up here who has heard this a few times, apparently. Honestly, I trust few dealerships but these guys I really do. Can't say enough nice things.

I have a new theory - I see a few threads about people having seized brakes from underuse (common in EVs), so hear me out:
  • We know that Toyota was very conservative about protecting the battery, so the buffer that we can't access is around 10%, which is more than enough to protect it even if we charge to 100%.
  • We know that people are complaining about range, so it would make Solterras/bZ4x look better to be charging more and have that nice bigger number for range for the average person.
  • We know that charging to 100% makes it so you use your non-regenerative (conventional) brakes more (for about ten percent or so), making them stay non-seized and not as rusty.
  • We know that the battery stops charging quickly after 80% when on DC, so having it be at 100% won't happen as often with that anyway.
  • The owner's manual is clear - charging to 100% on level 2 is fine (and Toyotabaru definitely don't want to replace these batteries under warranty, so I'm guessing it's okay to trust that).
This could point to the 2024s having that slight change, or at least all vehicles with the newer software having this change. I do notice that I can make it stay at 80% once, and then after unplugging it goes back to "Full" as the charge limit, so maybe they're trying to discourage it.

Just a thought! Fun to hypothesize!

My Solterra is a 2023 Limited so I don't have any first hand information to help you. My guess is that it's a software glitch. But it seems there is little reason not to charge to 100% unless the drive from your house is a big down hill and the full charge would prevent significant regeneration.

Good point, but what about battery cooling in the heat? Will I be able to just leave it on “shore power” at 100 and it will still cool it?

If that is true, I’d better set up a service appointment for my 2023 Touring.

Looks like my charging limit stays where I set it, and I only charge with a L2 charger.

I’m calling BS on the claim it defaults to 100%.
Good points all, and they are on it. They are calling up lots of places and following up so I’ll post more when I learn more.

Update: my dealership has been working with me and went out and checked the rest of their Solterra - turns out all of them were doing it too. They’re escalating and trying to get it fixed now. They’re being awesome and I’m happy to know it’s not just mine - they tried quite a few of them, apparently.

Maybe the first 2024 software bug (we know about)? Seems interesting we haven't heard anything about a major update to the 2023's yet, but sounds like that may be a good thing. :)

Yeah, no kidding! But again, I really suspect that they want us to charge to 100%, either because it doesn't really matter with the huge buffer or because it makes the range look better. Nissan did the same thing with the Leaf first gen after the first few years...

Ok, so as a new owner I have no choice but to put another brick in the wall of annoyance. I too am seeing the charge limit revert to "Full" regardless of how I set it. So today I got home, reset it to 90% and overrode the charge schedule (charge now) and of course it did stop at 90%. I will have to wait until I drive it next to see what it does. But along with this oddity, my CarPlay keeps disconnecting after I park and go to work. It works fine at home overnight, but after work I come out to the car and I have to go to vehicle customize settings, bluetooth devices, tap my phone (which is still stored in it), and then turn on the button that says use for CarPlay. I am not sure how it gets turned off, but just another software glitch in an otherwise cool car.

This reminds me that 1.) GM stated a while back that a majority of their new hires (over some span of time) were software engineers, rather than mechanical engineers/designers, and 2.) Akio Toyoda is still talking out of both sides of his mouth, and is frankly stuck out of step with trends.

I bet it’ll be right back at full when you come back… and yes, I’ve noticed the CarPlay annoyance too! Glad I’m not alone… best of luck!

Hi all!

I'm loving my new Solterra here in Washington state in the USA. I've been an EV owner before, a couple of times, so I'm not totally new to the idea. It just fits my needs perfectly.

However, I'm experiencing some severe frustration regarding the charging limit - I can't seem to change it permanently. I'd like to stop it at 80%, and I've tried changing it with the green Ready light on, as a guest, as a primary driver, at night, in the rain, while eating pizza with and without anchovies... nothing works.

I'm usually a great problem solver with tech (I work in a school - a necessary skill there) but this one has me stumped. Two questions:

  1. How have you gotten the chosen charge limit to stick?
  2. Does it actually matter with a buffer this size? I want to keep this car a nice long time...

Thanks very much!
I’m loving my 24 Solterra here in SoCal as well AND having the same exact charging limit issue. Please let me know if you come up with a solution.

I am about to go down to my garage to play with the layers of settings. Perhaps I will stumble on something. I did have a problem yesterday trying to get my digital key set up; app update issue. When I called Solterra Connect they were courteous, and said they were going to "log the issue". Perhaps a lot of that is needed to get things moving.

2024 Limited Owner here and having the same issue. Need to select 80% each time I want to charge. Got to the point where I am timing the schedule so it is at 80% when I leave in the morning as when I select 80% and have a schedule I end up with 100% charge every time. Not that I need it. Hopefully fixed or I become educated on correct way to do it if I am missing something

My best guess at this point is that it is a software issue. When I got my limited a few weeks ago, the sales person said there was a software update in the works. No ETA.

I just heard from Subaru/Toyota Connected by phone today (they've been pretty great) and they asked me to make a video, and that they were looking into it being a whole model year issue, if not more. I sent them the requested video and a big long explanation. They will start working on an update ASAP, according to the very nice rep who called me.
